Brooklyn Scouts is exploring the possibility of an additional gender-equal Scout group to the Windsor Terrace/Park Slope communities, to meet our overwhelming demand in central Brooklyn. The group will plan to meet on alternating Thursdays from the 5th Prospect Park group starting in September, 2018, and will also be based out of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture at 53 Prospect Park West (and Prospect Park as weather permits)
As we are an all-volunteer organization, in order for this group to launch, we require parents to commit in advance to leadership and key volunteer roles. We will be hosting an info night on Thursday, June 14th to explain the roles needed and gauge community response.
We encourage all parents interested in joining Brooklyn Scouts’ Park Slope communities to attend the info night to learn more about our organization, our culture, and the volunteer needs for starting a new group. Without enough parent support, we cannot launch or continue our groups, and will not be able to meet demand. We have a great organization that our Scouts love, but as a co-operative, volunteer run community, we require parent commitment to make it happen.
We strongly encourage interested families to attend and sign up even if you are unsure if you can commit to a role yet. We welcome families in order of our group priorities, so families taking on key volunteer roles (leadership, procurement/gear management, admin, outings and camp kitchen/cooking) are first to receive space in the group.
While we welcome children of all gender identities, we especially encourage parents of girls to attend and find out more about what BPSA can offer for your daughter, as our ten years of gender equal, inclusive program development gives us an outdoors focused program that all Scouts can participate and enjoy together. If your daughter or her friends love being outside, we offer equal opportunity in experience, leadership and skills, as well as a great community activity your entire family can do together.
If you plan to attend either Park Slope group in the fall, please sign up here:
This will give us an idea of how much space we will also need at each meeting as well as our community demand.
About Brooklyn Scouts
Brooklyn Scouts is a gender-equal alternative Scouting community, part of the Baden-Powell Service Association national organization. We hold bi-weekly meetings, monthly outings or activities, and camp 4 – 5 times per year as a community. Camps for younger Scouts also include the whole family. (as seen in the photo of Otters at camp, right). We focus on service and the outdoors, teaching even our littlest Scouts the value of helping others, while also instilling a life-long love of nature and the outdoors.
